How to make text shadowed in Photoshop?

September 24, 2007

There are many ways to add a shadow to a text. The easiest way is to select Blending Options in the text layer and then select Drop Shadow. The shadow effect can be modified by choosing another color, opacity and others. For a much more customized effect I propose you to read the full article.

Follow this steps to be initiated. You can than alter as you want for obtaining different effects :

Step 1: Open a new document and type some text. I used the Arial Black Font Family and 27pt for Font Size.

Step 2: Duplicate the Text Layer by choosing: Layer Menu=>Duplicate Layer. Now you have to move this new layer above the old one by dragging and drop in the Layer Panel.

Step 3: Go to Edit Menu=>Transform=>Flip vertical. Now choose Move Tool and drag the layer down. You will get something like this:

Step 4: Select the duplicate layer, click the right mouse button and select Rasterize Layer. This transformation won’t be observed but if we don’t choose we won’t be able to select Perspective option in the Edit Menu=>Transform. So, now select Shadowed copy layer and go to Edit Menu=>Transform=>Perspective. Now drag and drop one corners of the selected area.

Step 5: Here are few more effects added for a professional result.

  • Select Layer Menu=>Layer Style=>Blending Option=>Gradient Overlay. Here select the gradient box and put the blue color(used for text) instead of the black default and hit the reverse check box.
  • Set the opacity to 70% like in the image below:

  • Go to Filter Menu=>Blur and select Gaussian Blur. Select the radius to 1.0 pixels.

This is all… Here is the result and hope to be useful ;)
