Having lines on an image using Photoshop - Using paterns

Step 1 Open a new document having 4×4 dimension and set the foreground black and the background white.

Step 2 Select Pencil Tool (B key). Put the mouse over the work surface, right click and select Master Diameter 2px.

Step 3 Fill with black superior half of the document. You should obtain an image similar with the image below. Note that the image is expanded.

Step 4 Now save the image as a pattern. Go to Edit -> Define Pattern gave a name your pattern and hit Ok. Then close this document.

Step 5 Open an image using Photoshop. I used the image below:

Step 6 Add a new layer. Select Paint Bucket Tool (G key) and choose, from buttons bar, pattern fill. Here select the pattern created earlier.

Step 7 In the image window, having Layer 1 selected, have a click on the image surface and set the opacity to 20. Here is the final version:
