Abstract background

November 11, 2007

Photoshop is a great tool if you want to draw something abstract. There are few tutorials about the Filters you can add to your picture, but I believe it is important to know how these filters works. You can try my example or you can combine elementary tricks in your own way.

I will “teach” you to create an abstract background which can be useful in many situations.

Create a new document having 400×400 pixels dimension. Hit D key on your keyboard to reset the colors. Now follow the next steps:

  • Filter>Render>Clouds and Filter>Render>Difference Clouds - hit Ctrl+F to repeat the effect
  • Filter>Distort>Wave and hit OK
  • Filter>Distort>Twirl and choose value 250 to the angle and hit OK
  • Repeat the steps and set the angle to 200
  • Now you are on layer2 with new twirl. Go to Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal. Set Blending Mode to Lighten and now create a new layer.
  • Filter>Render>Clouds. Filter>Render>Difference Clouds. Filter>Blur>Radial Blur/ Amount:10 Method:Spin Quality:Good and hit OK. Set Blending Mode to Color Dodge and this should be all!

You can add color selecting every layer, then hit Ctrl+U and choose colorize. You have a colored image now.

This is my result. It may be represented in many ways! Try your own abstract background :)
